That particular compilation is the story of Darrell Robinson, a junior, print journalism major from Clinton, Maryland. With a blog focusing on music and his weekend DJ experiences, Robinson has found a way to remix his passion for music, with his knowledge in journalism.

Q: Why a Print Journalism Major instead of a Music Major?

A: I have played an instrument most of my life, such as the saxophone or the piano, but I didn’t feel as if I was that good. Looking back now, I realize that I didn’t try hard enough. The musicians on television made it look easy and I thought they had a natural talent that I didn’t. Journalism was my fallback. In a perfect world, I would be a musician.

Q: Well since you are a Print Journalism major at Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications, how do you apply your media knowledge to music?

A: With journalism you have to be current, and that applies to being a DJ. The new song you heard on the radio, you must have. With journalism you have to know a little bit about a lot. With being a Dj, you must have music from everywhere.

Q: Flip the previous question around. How does your love for music influence your studies as a Print Journalist?

A: It gives me something to write and be passionate about. Writing about music makes my job fun. My Pops always told me that whatever you want to  make sure you enjoy it, because you have to do it everyday.

Q: How do you plan on integrating your knowledge of journalism with your passion for music in the future?

A: My end-goal is to start a regional magazine that focuses on music. If I’m living in DC, it will be for the Delmarva area. If I’m in New York, it will be Harlem. It’ll be a Vibe kind of thing.

Q: What is your quote to live by?

A: My mom always told me, “You’re in charge of your own happiness.” If I’m having a bad day, I make it a better day. I do it all the time.

Q: If you had to pick a word, or a phrase to define a piece of who you are, what would it be?

A: Nice Guys Don’t Finish Last. It is my life goal to prove the other statement (nice guys finish last) untrue. It’s not easy though.
